Time to lay off Pietersen

After today coming out and acknowledging that his remarks may have been taken the wrong way and that they were ill-advised isn't it now the time for people to get off Kevin Pietersen's back and let him get on with preparing for Friday's deciding ODI with West Indies. Nasser Hussain was the latest to let Pietersen know what he thought today - ironically in his own newspaper column - about the interview he gave to the Daily Mail last week.

Look at the facts what exactly has Pietersen said or done that was so out of order? He asked the England management team if he could go home for 48 hours between Test Matches to see his wife, this request was turned down and Pietersen accepted this and got on with it. What is so wrong with that? He has now also accepted that this was an unreasonable request and realises he made a mistake - no great issue surely.

The remark about doing a Robinho was apparently a tongue-in-cheek off the record remark which Pietersen made, sure it was a mistake to say something like that in front of a journalist, he then went on to say that he wants to come home and see his wife and that he is feeling a bit homesick, again was it really that bad? The press often complain about getting bland interviews off sports people, that they always get the stock answer, played with a straight bat if you like. Here we have a bloke who gives his honest opinion and he gets slaughtered for it.

In his newspaper article he criticized Samit Patel and Shiv Chanderpaul. He said that Samit Patel had been warned about his level of fitness as far back as when he was captain around about the time of the tour to India. Has Patel listened? Clearly not, Pietersen was merely stating that he couldn't understand Patel's attitude, that here was his chance to represent his country and he couldn't be bothered to get himself fit. A criticism that surely anybody could understand, again what has he done wrong?

To criticize Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the way he did was perhaps a bit out of order, what goes on with West Indies team is really none of his business. Entitled to his opinion he is, but maybe this is a view he should have kept to himself. But then to hear David Lloyd on Sky Sports having a go at Pietersen over the irony that he injured his back bowling to Chanderpaul was ridiculous, sure Pietersen was wrong to say what he did but he didn't stage manage the injury to gain maximum publicity, if you listened to Lloyd he would have you believe that he did when he said that Pietersen can't keep himself out of the news.

Nothing against Lloyd as I like listening to him and his commentary is entertaining and livens up proceedings on dull days but he is very one eyed when it comes to critizising England players, fellow Lancastrians Flintoff and in particular James Anderson never have bad days or bad games if you believe what Lloyd says, indeed the amount of time Anderson has been unlucky is staggering, come on read the stats they don't lie Lloyd!

Let us not forget the way the captaincy was taken away from Kevin, clearly it still hurts and listening to him he hasn't got over it yet. Who knows in a few months – I know it dose not seem like it now - we might be thanking Pietersen for getting rid of Peter Moores if the England team can start to move forward under a more internationally accomplished coach.

This is also the man who said he wouldn't stand for any flashy behaviour and insensitivity from his players if they won the 1 million dollar Stanford match in light of people back home losing their jobs and homes during the recession, this is the man who played a large part in getting the England team to go back to India after the Mumbai atrocities, people seem quick to forget these things.

West Indies are slight favourites at 10/11 Sportingbet for the deciding ODI on Friday. England can be backed at Evens with Totesport.

Free cricket bets - New Zealand V India, 2nd Test Day 5

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

The draw is now the odds on favourite at 1/7 with Boylesports
New Zealand are 6/1 with Ladbrokes
India are 50/1 with Sky Bet

The draw is now heavily odds on favourite after a backs-to-the-wall reguard action by India yesterday. Starting the day on 47/1 the Indian batsmen grinded their way through an attritional day to reach 252/2 at the close with Gautam Gambhir unbeaten on 102. Gambhir's century wasn't without chances, during the first session he was itching to come down the wicket to the Kiwi spinners and at time drove upwardly keeping the fielders on their toes.

It remains to be seen whether New Zealand can get the 8 wickets needed to level the series, they will be hoping the pitch has deteriorated enough for for the spinners to get some assistance from it. India know that if they can hold their nerve today that they can't lose the series. A tight tense day promises to be in store and for the sake of the series a New Zealand victory wouldn't go amiss.

Free Bets, Cricket West Indies V England 4th ODI

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

West Indies are 8/11 with Totesport
England are 6/5 with Betfred

After Friday's thrashing for England there seems to have been a significant shift in the bookmakers opinion when it comes to compiling the odds. In the previous three ODI's both teams have always been around the 10/11 to Evens mark suggesting the bookies regard them as equally matched teams, after Friday's disaster - from Englands point of view - that opinion seems to have changed with clear daylight now seperating the teams in the odds with Windies at 8/11 and England at 6/5.

On the team news front the West Indies don't really need to change a winning side, indeed they should have already won the series had it not been for John Dyson's interpretation of the Duckworth/Lewis system. England meanwhile due to poor form and the wrong selection policy as usual don't really have any options but to stick with the same losing side, with the exception of bringing in a second wicketkeeper solely to bat they only have Ian Bell & he was dropped due to bad form and on the bowling front Steve Harmison and Amjad Khan have hardly set the world on fire. Maybe a debut for Adil Rashid - so we can see how he handles himself and to give him a taste of international cricket - would be too much to expect from Englands so-called think tank.

Cricket Free Bets, New Zealand V India 2nd Test Day 3

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

Draw is favourite at 4/7 with Bet365
New Zealand are 15/8 with William Hill
India are 22/1 with Ladbrokes

At the start of day 3 New Zealand are in total control of the Test match. Jesse Ryder completed his maiden double century as the Kiwi's posted a massive 619 for 9 dec, Ryder was cleary fuming with himself when he played on to Zaheer Khan the very next ball after completing his feat. After that Brendon McCullum also went on to reach his century scoring his hundred off 131 balls.

India then got to 79 for 3 losing openers Gambhir and Sehwag and nightwatchman Sharma as they surprisingly struggled to cope with the two New Zealand spinners. After getting no joy with the opening seam bowlers, Vettori turned to himself and Jeetan Patel to take the attack to India and it proved to be the right decision as between them they picked up all three wickets to fall. India must now be regretting not taking this match more seriously, by only showing up the day before the start and not bothering to practise to get used to the conditions showed incredible arrogance.

Cricket Free Bets West Indies V England 3rd ODI

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

West Indies are Evens with Totesport
England are favourites 10/11 with VC Bet

27th March, 3rd One Day International. Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The series is all square heading into todays 3rd ODI after West Indies beat England by 21 runs in Guyana on Sunday. The fact still remains that the only match England have won all winter is the one that West Indies gifted them with the Duckworth/Lewis fiasco. All dosen't seem to be great in the England camp at the moment with Kevin Pietersen admitting he would rather be at home at the moment. The West Indies have also had their problems with threats of strikes and stories of players not getting paid, it almost seems to be who wants to shoot themselves in the foot more out of these two teams sometimes.

The West indies have at last decided enough is enough for Daren Powell who it seems has been on the verge of getting dropped for the whole of the series and have repalced him with Ravi Rampaul, Dale Richards has also been called up to replace Devon Smith. England have Andrew Flintoff fully fit again and he will return to the side, probally at the expense of Steve Harmison.

West Indies squad for 3rd & 4th ODI's - Chris Gayle (C), Lionel Baker, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Nikita Miller, Keiron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin (WK), Ravi Rampaul, Dale Richards, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons.

England from - Andrew Strauss (C), James Anderson, Gareth Batty, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Steve Davies (WK), Andrew Flintoff, Steve Harmison, Amjad Khan, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior (WK), Adil Rashid, Owais Shah.

Free Bets South Africa V Australia, 1st T20 Preview

Cricket Bets & Best Odds

1st T20, Friday 27th March. New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg

Australia are slight favourites at 10/11 with Boylesports
South Africa are Evens with Paddy Power

The first of two T20 internationals gets underway later today and it promises to be another close encounter between these two equally matched teams. The South Africans plan to look at all of the players in their 15 man squad in this two match series as this is the last competitive T20 series they will play before the World Cup in England this summer. Johan Botha will lead the South Africans in the continued absence of the injured Graeme Smith.

The Aussies have big hitting David Warner back for these matches and the South Africans have already had a taste of what he has to offer when they were on the end of his 89 from 43 balls in Melbourne recently. They have also added Shane Harwood to the squad while Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus have returned home.

Squads

South Africa - Johan Botha (C), Yusuf Abdulla, Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Johann Louw, Albie Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Roelof van der Merwe, Vaughn van Jaarsveld.

Australia - Ricky Ponting (C), Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Callum Ferguson, Brett Geeves, Brad Haddin (WK), Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Laughlin, Marcus North, Cameron White, David Warner, Shane Harwood.

Free bets, New Zealand V India, 2nd Test Day 2

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

Draw is favourite at 8/15 with Sportingbet
New Zealand are 7/2 with Totesport
India are 11/2 with Stan James

After a disasterous start that had at one stage seen them at 23/3, New Zealand ended up having a great day finishing in a strong posititon with a mamoth 351/4. Rarely can there have been such a turnaround in a teams fortunes, when Ross Taylor was joined at the crease by Jessie Ryder on 23/3 it looked only a matter of time before Taylor would be following his fellow batsmen back to the pavillion such was the way he was playing. After 15 minutes of edges, playing and missing and also a dropped catch whilst on only four Taylor finally settled down and smashed the Indian attack for a risky and entertaining century, along with Ryder they both scored centuries while putting on a record 4th wicket partnership of 271.

In contrast to Taylor's innings, Ryder's was a far more controlled one. He scored his second century of the series without looking in any danger and always seemed well in control of his batting whether attacking or defending. Unbeaten on 137 Ryder will be looking to occupy the crease today and let the likes of Franklin, McCullum and Vettori take the game to India with their attacking stroke play.

Premier League Darts Free Bets Week 8

Fixtures and Best Odds, Free Bets

18.30 Mardle 14/5 Ladbrokes V King 4/7 Totesport Draw 5/1 Paddy Power

19.30 Jenkins 4/6 Boylesports V Klaasen 11/4 Sportingbet Draw 9/2 Sky Bet

20.30 Part 4/1 Bet365 V Wade 1/2 Sky Bet Draw 5/1 Paddy Power

21.30 Taylor 4/9 William Hill V Barneveld 4/1 Stan James Draw 11/2 Ladbrokes

Earlier than normal start this week with proceedings getting under way at 18.30 at the NIA in Birmingham. Tonights fixtures marks the start of the second half of the league format in this years competition and for the first week in a long time Mervyn King is no longer top of the table.

King starts the nights entertainment against Wayne Mardle. Having picked up only one point from his last three games King really needs a win to stop the rot and consolidate his place in the top four with Part and Barney breathing down his neck. King must have thought he was back to winning ways last week at 4-1 up against Terry Jenkins until 'The Bull' took out a 100 finish to start a run of six consecutive legs. Mardle had his usual up and down performance losing three legs, then winning three in a row only to lose the next five on his way to an 8-3 defeat to James Wade, expect King to stop the rot tonight as Mardle has been missing to many doubles lately.

Terry Jenkins wasn't looking too good last week when he was 4-1 down to Mervyn King, he then turned the match on its head winning seven of the next eight legs with an amazing display of darts that seemed to come totally out of the blue on his way to a magnificent 8-5 victory. Jelle Klaasen is finding it tough in this company every week, an exciting prospect he is for sure but he is by no means the finished article yet and this league is really starting to punish him. I know i keep writing he will thrash someone soon but his confidence must be getting lower every week at the moment. At least in facing Jenkins he has a bit of a chance - compared to Barney or Taylor - this week, but if both pick up where they left off last week it will be another defeat for the Dutchman.

James Wade is the form player in this format at the moment, another comfortable win last week seen him replace Mervyn King at the top of the table, he didn't need to be anywhere near his best averaging just under 99 in seeing off Wayne Mardle 8-3. Part never really got into his match either - losing 8-3 to Phil Taylor. The Canadian has been a much improved performer this season in the Premier League after not really getting going in last years tournament and is pushing hard for a top four finish. Expect Part to put up a better showing than last weeks in what could be a tight game, still expect Wade to edge it though possibly 8-6.

The nights main event sees Phil Taylor go head to head with Raymond van Barneveld. This fixture seems to bring the best out of Taylor and recent results show he has got the upper hand on Barney at the moment. Last week Taylor seen off John Part with an average of 104 in an 8-3 win which also included a 170 checkout, he is in good form at the moment with another win double last weekend in Brentwood, his third double header PDC win this year. Barney had a not so difficult night last thursday only needing an average of 91.51 to see off Jelle Klaasen, the week before though he was on top form averaging just under 106 while thrashing Mervyn King also 8-3. Barney will surely need to be in that sort of form again tonight if he is to have any chance against Taylor, on the betting exchanges Betfair have Taylor just a touch under 1/2, you don't get odds that good on Taylor very often.

Cricket Free Bets - 2nd Test New Zealand V India

2nd Test Napier, New Zealand. Mar 26 - Mar 30.

Cricket Free Bets & Best Odds

New Zealand are 6/1 with Ladbrokes
Draw is 11/8 with Blue Square
India are favourites at 23/20 with Bet365

India will be looking to end a drought of 41 years without a Test series victory in New Zealand when the 2nd Test gets under way later today. The Indians will be looking to carry forward the momentum from their 10 wicket 1st Test victory and keep all the pressure on a Kiwi side that was comprehensively outplayed in all departments during the 4 days the Test lasted.

Daniel Vettori stopped just short of criticizing his teams 1st Test showing but did say that the New Zealand public expect to see their cricket team put up a fight. Ahead of the 2nd Test he said "They probably need to see the New Zealand team to come out and fight. The big thing about the New Zealand public is that as long as they see the New Zealand cricket side fight for a result - doesn't matter if there is a hard-fought win or a hard-fought loss, I think they are satisfied. The performance we put together in Hamilton wasn't consistent with that." The bookies seem to have already dismissed their chances with 6/1 available with Ladbrokes on a Kiwi win before a ball has even being bowled.

After asking for a seamer friendly pitch - which he claims not to have received, a disappointed Vettori now looks set to play a second spinner with Jeetan Patel coming in for the average and very wayward Kyle Mills. Daniel Flynn is a slight doubt with a hand injury, if he fails to make it Jamie How is likely to take his place.

India have no such problems and look set to name an unchanged team, Munaf Patel did a good job as the 3rd seamer and after filling their boots in the 1st Test the batsmen look like they could be in for a treat on this pitch if the reports are to be believed.

Teams

New Zealand (probable) Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill, Daniell Flynn or Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Jesse Ryder, James Franklin, Brendon McCullum (WK), Daniel Vettori (C), Jeetan Patel, Iain O'Brien, Chris Martin.

India (probable) Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni(C & WK), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel

Liverpool V Aston Villa Free Bets 22/03/09

Best odds and Free Bets

Liverpool 1/2 William Hill V Aston Villa 15/2 Stan James Draw 16/5 Bet365

Teams

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Kuyt, Riera, Torres.

Subs: Cavalieri, Dossena, Hyypia, Agger, Lucas, Ngog, El Zhar.

Aston Villa: Friedel, Reo-Coker, Cuellar, Davies, Luke Young, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Heskey, Carew.

Subs: Guzan, Agbonlahor, Delfouneso, Knight, Salifou, Shorey, Gardner.

This afternoons Live Sky game sees Aston Villa travel to Anfield to take on in form Liverpool. After a run of seven games without a win a trip to Anfield is the last thing Villa need - they're at Old Trafford next week as well. It is almost as if they hit the wall when they went odds on to claim a top four finish, leaving them open to claims that they can't handle the pressure. Liverpool on the other hand have just arguably had their best week ever under Rafa Benitez, the thrashings of Real Madrid and Manchester United seen them become the most feared side in the Champions League draw last Friday.

The Reds have the 'Gerrard - Torres' partnership firing at the moment and we're led to believe Torres still isn't 100% fit, Villa will be hoping he dosen't find full fitness today. Martin O'Neil has left the short off confidence Agbonlahor on the bench and Captain Martin Laursen is still missing with a knee injury.

Cricket Free Bets West Indies V England ODI Series

Five more chances for England to register their first competitive international win of the winter. After the debacle of the T20 match on Sunday Andrew Strauss has declared himself fit for the first ODI giving himself another chance to prove himself as a one day player and one day captain. It would be fair to say the press Strauss and England have received since Sundays defeat hasn't been to favourable to say the least, the repercussions for them if they lose this series heavily dosen't bear thinking about for Strauss. West Indies have no such problems and also have skipper Chris Gayle back in the squad, its not certain he will be fit enough for the first game though, on a surprising note they have left spinner Sulieman Benn out of their squad for the first 2 games, instead opting for Nikita Miller.

Going into the 1st ODI at Providence Stadium in Guyana and England are still looking a total mess. Still no Andrew Flintoff, Strauss to open or not? If Steven Davies continues in the side apparently he will open, whereas if Prior returns he will bat down the order! To say the England think tank know what they're doing would be a joke, they look like going into the game with another inexperienced opening partnership of Bopara and Davies, neither of whom are natural openers, why?
