Strange days cricket with South Africa making an awful start. First they didn't bother to call for a review on a blatent LBW which was turned down by umpire Asad Rauf, then when they did review one it hadn't even pitched in line. Add to that the two dropped catches from both the Australian openers and it was an awful first hour for South Africa. Then South Africa fought back with Paul Harris dismissing Phil Hughes and Albie Morkel got his first test wicket in Ricky Ponting.
Dale Steyn then bowled a superb spell removing Hussey and Clarke in quick succession during a ferocious spell just after lunch, the Aussies showed a bit of resistance with Haddin and Johnson hanging around but the damage had been done and they collapsed to 209 all out with Steyn finishing with impressive figures of 4/56 off 16 overs. South Africa's openers then negotiated the last hour comfortably reaching 57/0 at the close.
