Betfair you have the opportunity to bet 'punter to punter' where you can back and lay a team, dog, horse etc to win or lose thus you eliminate the need for bookmakers. i.e when you 'back' a team, dog, horse etc, you are betting that it will win just like you do with a bookmaker. Whereas when you 'lay' it you are betting against it winning, if for example you think England won't win the World Cup you lay England, you offer odds to other backers who wish to back England.(Therefore you are effectively betting The Field Vs Eng) If England don't win, then you pick up the backers stake, if England win then you pay out in a way that traditional bookmakers would.
