Relegation Betting Guide 11/05/09

Newcastle took a massive leap towards Premier League survival tonight with a 3-1 win over north east relegation rivals Middlesbrough. Alan Shearer's side fought back from going a goal down to Habib Beye's own goal in only the third minute with strikes from Steven Taylor, Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands to condemn Boro to defeat and with it almost certain relegation.

Gareth Southgate's team started well as usual but as soon as Newcastle got going the Boro youngsters again struggled to cope and looked short on confidence and self belief, Middlesbrough seem to lack experience and know how in tight situations and it is costing them too many matches. Getting rid of high earning seasoned players like Jonathan Woodgate, Mark Schwarzer and George Boateng in a bid to lower the wage bill - while replacing them with players from the youth system - seems to have back fired on them.

The bookies it would appear have now given up on boro - cutting them from 2/7 to a best price 1/16 to go down. Hull are now 1/3 and Sunderland have been cut from 7/1 to 11/2, with Newcastle the big gainers going out to 11/4.
